Pema arrived in January 2018 – a 5 month old, disabled pup – dark gold and white in colour. She was brought in by two Sherpa boys from Tinchuli, near Boudha. She had been abandoned, and no-one in the area seemed to know the dog. At the clinic, Dr Sushil recognized Pema as a pup brought in by its owners 3 weeks before. He had diagnosed her with a birth defect, probably due to inbreeding, and nothing could be done. So it seems that the owners then abandoned her – local people do not like deformed dogs. At the shelter, she showed herself to be an outgoing, active, friendly dog – not in any way impeded by her deformed hind quarters. She loved affection. Sadly, she died unexpectedly in the night of 23rd May 2020, with no signs of vomiting, diarrhoea or vomiting or any injury. We suspect heart failure. She will be badly missed by many people who new her.
